Petition to keep the Open Door

After 29 years the Open Door‘s administrators received notice they have until the end of July to find a new home for the day centre, which caters to people who have been turned away from shelters across the city.

Since 40% of the service users are Inuit, the Open Door is a crucial resource to the community. They offer an Inuit housing program as well as an Inuit transition to the North program. Furthermore, they provide Indigenous food when possible and have a stone carving program.

Please sign this petition to save The Open Door so that we can continue to serve a community in crucial need of these essential services.

We hit 250 signatures and the suits in charge are finally starting to sweat. They think they can just shove the most vulnerable people in this city out the door but they are dead wrong.

The bureaucrats in charge expect us to just roll over and let them shut down The Open Door. We are hitting the 250 mark soon and they need to see that this community is not giving up without a real fight.

The city bureaucrats are waiting for us to lose steam so they can shut down the Open Door without a fight. We are just signatures away from hitting our first hundred and I need you to force them to pay attention right now.

This organization is providing integral support and community. As a neighbour I recognize the importance of keeping this in my backyard! I ask the city and local governments to find a solution to this urgent issue.

I am currently a student at McGill University, and I volunteered for Open Door last summer for 2 months. I believe that Open Door MUST stay open one way or another for the local homeless population of Montreal!

I have seen first hand the work the Open Door does. They are unique, and provide a safe place for people who are not welcome at other shelters. The work they do is important and the city and its people will be at a loss if this organization is shut down.

This is grassroots reconciliation work, helping those impacted by social dislocation in the Arctic. It deserves the support of all Canadians.

By virtue of knowing a staff member of the Open Door I have heard stories of the incredible work that is done here in transforming the lives of low-income and street involved people. It would be a truly devastating blow to the people who depend on this service for it to need to shut down. Please save the Open Door!

This is a unique service and a unique place, essential to a city that pretends to be inclusive and respectful. In this time when we are trying to achieve some sort of reconciliation, the fact that so many of the users are Inuit just adds to the urgency.

Please let me know of any protests that are happening in the area.

Why would anyone want to close this resource, or force it to move to a place less useful?
