Protect the Onondaga Lake Bald Eagles
Last month we learned that Onondaga County has identified a plan to extend the Creekwalk Trail along the shoreline of Murphy's Island. While Onondaga Audubon supports recreation around Onondaga Lake, including the completion of the Loop-the-Lake Trail, the current placement proposed by the County endangers the Bald Eagles that have been roosting in this area every winter since at least 2008 in numbers as great as 39 individuals!
On December 5th, the Onondaga County Legislature will reconvene to vote to provide funding to this trail plan. Please sign this petition asking them not to place the trail along the shoreline of Murphy's Island. Keeping the trail solely along the mall side of Murphy's Island should provide recreationists with a trail to use while keeping the area safe for use by wintering Bald Eagles that depend on the tall trees and ice-free zones provided by the nearby wastewater treatment plant to sustain themselves during the harsh winter months.
Please sign below if you agree that Onondaga County Legislators should not fund the Murphy's Island Trail plan unless the trail route is changed to keep the trail loop from extending along the shoreline or interior of the island which will likely cause great disturbance to wintering Bald Eagles.
All signatures must be submitted by December 3, 2017 to be delivered to the Onondaga County Legislature on December 4th.
Thank you for your support,
