In these very difficult trading times, when all other Councils and the Government are trying to help town centres and small businesses, Oxford City Council are seeking to increase our rents by an average of 50%, and some, by as much as 70%. This level of increase in our overheads is unsustainable for the majority of tenants and will mean a large number of them being put at risk of losing their business. The very existence of the market itself is in jeopardy.
If you feel as strongly as we the tenants do, please support us by adding your name to the petition below.
In anticipation of your support, I would like thank you on behalf of all the tenants of Oxford Covered Market.
We are approaching ten thousand signatures. One final push will force the council to listen.

The council has agreed to a meeting regarding these rent hikes. Your signatures provided the leverage needed to finally get us a seat at the table.

One thousand signatures for the market. This shows the council exactly how much this place matters.

Please save this unique historic market, which is not only one of Oxford's finest tourist attractions but also a real boon to locals who can still find unusual and useful things in it. Its character is unique and the shops make a contribution both to the city of Oxford and its inhabitants. Don't let it disappear.

The persistence of the covered market's diverse small businesses is of great value to Oxford students and residents. I urge the City Coundil to help these businesses survive by maintaining existing levels of rent.

I have shopped in the stores in the covered market since I moved here 16 years ago. Many of the business owners go out of their way to support their customers and visitors. It is our turn to support them.

If you force out every independent trader with sky-high rents, Oxford will become the same as every other city center; and why would anybody visit then? Don't let these shortsighted measures destroy an important and unique part of the city's charm

It may be the poshest market i know but i'd hate to see it lose the food factor. A higher rent would inevitably attract chain stores and the place would cease to be a market, more of an arcade. We've enough of them. Keep small business in the city.

I live in Hampshire and visited the market today for the first time, it was refreshing to see genuine butchers, greengrocer and cheesemonger. I found the rest of Oxford shopping experience boring, I could have been anywhere, the covered market was the single redeeming feature that might entice me to return.

The unique shopping offer in Oxford has deteriorated rapidly and the sad state of the covered market reflects this. The new westgate is the same predictable chain stores, there must be room for the small trader that gives so much character and diversity to the city.

This is part of Oxfords appeal. Not everyone wants to visit the colleges.
