My fellow Americans, the Confederate States of America was defeated in what is known as the civil war. It is true that the Battle flag was raised in the 1960s. It is even speculated that it was raised in response to the civil rights movement. However, prior to that it was mainly used to commemorate confederate veterans. What does it mean today? When I see the flag do I think of hatred of the civil rights? NO. I think of history and why we are the nation we are today. I think of the men who died, be it for an incorrect ideology, or in defense of their homes. It is a rebellious flag, yet so is Old Glory. We cannot let the hatred of a few spoil the lessons learned from the past. This flag flies lower than the Union Flag. In subordination to the victors on the battle field. If you believe it is a symbol of hate (whether for it staying or against) remember this. This flag is not equal to the union nor does it have any impact on the freedoms you now enjoy. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King: Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. Let us not put history in the "dark" even if parts are not pleasant.

If you remove the Confederate flag you must remove the Union flag as well. Both stood for the same things on different sides.
