This architecturally superb theatre is a central gem of the Berkeley Arts District and draws people from all around the Bay Area. Public comment on this project has been rushed through without adequate notice or public Input. In the past several years (beginning with The Rialto on Gilman Street) 7 movie theaters have closed in Berkeley. The last theater take- over was of The Fine Arts. The promise to build a replacement theater was realized in the form of the marquee that reads Fine Arts—and no theater.
The Shattuck brings many people to Downtown Berkeley restaurants and other businesses, resulting in a vibrant Cultural center of the city. People come from as far away as Sacramento and stay overnight to see a film. The Shattuck shows documentaries, indies, and the best foreign films. Absent the Shattuck, the business will shift to SF, and Berkeley will become a cultural desert for cinema. We can stop this from happening by making our voices heard now. It would be a shame to lose the Shattuck Cinema with all its cultural offerings right at the time the Pacific Film Archive is moving into downtown. It would be a real blow to the very active and informed film community in the East Bay.
I don't mind developing more housing in Berkeley but why do they need to tear down a beautiful landmark to do it? There is a ton of residential area thats being wasted on houses just off Shattuck. Develop there and leave the gorgeous downtown alone.
None of these hirises should be built until there is a comprehensive traffic study done and a report from the fire department as to how they will compe with a fire ten or fifteen stories up and what additional equipment, if any, will be required,
I think a building of this size, with NO affordable housing incuded, is very inappropriate for downtown Berkeley. WHat EIR thinks adding a building of this size makes any sense for traffic, housing, livability in downtown Berkeley?
I go to this wheelchair accessible theater whenever I can. I love the people, the comfort of the place. It feels like home. Please save this Berkeley landmark. Please extend the public comment period so we can get enough comments on this
The Shattuck CInemas are a Berkeley treasure, they bring people to nearby businesses and contribute to the vibrant art and film culture in downtown Berkeley which is it's one saving grace. If that goes there remain very few (affordable) reasons to frequent that part of Berkeley.

The Shattuck theaters are the main reason I visit downtown Berkeley. Afterwards I eat at a local restaurant. Apartment houses are a dime a dozen. Movie palaces like the ones at Shattuck are an endangered species and we should treasure them. Dick Kolbert
