They actually listened and voted to keep the red tiles right where they belong so the sidewalks are safe for now. I am honestly in shock that we managed to pull this off but it goes to show that just showing up makes a huge difference. Let's just keep walking …

In order to preserve our unique Spanish Village history, we the undersigned, petition the San Clemente City Government to listen to its residents and the San Clemente Historical Society, and continue to preserve, rehabilitate, restore or reconstruct the community’s precious historic red tile sidewalks. I just looked at the screen and saw we hit a hundred which is honestly wild because when I started this I was just annoyed about the crumbling grout near the old cafe and didn't think anyone else cared. It hits different knowing there are this many people who actually value that specific shade of red tile as much as I do.

Take a look at a new build on the corner of S Ola Vista and Cazidor. A great example of the owner using the San Clemente Red Tile to enhance the look of the project.

These tiles really help set our little community's visual landscape and truly add value and character to our town. I know they are more costly, but it is an expense I am willing to help with.

As a 30+ year resident of SC, the little things like the sidewalks and roofs are what sets out town apart from the surrounding cities and other beach towns. Let's keep it that way.

Founder Ole Hanson constructed over 6 miles of these red tile sidewalks in the late 1920s, and they were an integral part of his Spanish Village vision. A few years ago, the sidewalks were recommended for the City's official Designated Historic Resources List by the prestigious Historic Resources Group of Pasadena.

We just moved here and we love San Clemente. Please don't think of the short-term cost, think of the long-term benefit of preserving the character of our city. Don't let it become bland suburban sprawl like the rest of OC.

It is the seemingly small things that count, and San Clemente's historic fabric, including its red tile sidewalks, is what brought us here, and is what visiting friends and family comment most positively.
