As the owners of Sugarflake Bakery in Westwood New Jersey, we have always taken pride in what the exterior of our business looks like (Store front, windows). In doing that, we have had our windows painted for over 10 years with festive holiday and season, non permanent window painting. Done by a professional artist (we do window painting)who has been in business over 30 years. Our customers have come to know us by our windows. They look forward to and are delighted to see what we are going to paint next. Each year at home for the holidays in December we feel that our windows are a big part of this event and are the most festive. Within the past year we have incurred many problems with the town of Westwood and the ordinance of signage and window painting. We have been in court numerous times to no avail. Now after 10 years we have been told we are not aloud to paint our windows AT ALL! This is an outrage for us, our workers and our customers. Our inviting window painting has become a part Westwood avenue and a part of who we are as a thriving business. So in helping us to continue to beautify our windows please sign our petition, which will help let the town of Westwood know that this is important to our customers, and is a part of us!

March 23, 2012

I have finished drafting a formal request for a zoning variance to be submitted to the Westwood planning board next week. This document outlines the ten year history of our displays and provides legal precedent for artistic expression on private commercial storefronts. We are currently scouting for legal counsel specializing in municipal signage ordinances to review our arguments before the next hearing.

This is ridiculous. Those windows are the best part of walking down Westwood ave. Leave them alone!

The town has better things to do than harass a local bakery. Let them have their art its harmless and makes the street look nice.
