The former West Hurley Elementary School - two schools on one campus on 36 acres of land - is located in a close-knit neighborhood of working families and retirees. The residents of the community have repeatedly asked the school board and the town board to work together to create a community center and Nature Preserve for the residents of the Town of Hurley. To no avail.

The property is about to be sold to a developer from NYC who plans to build a minimum of 47 "market rate" apartments in the small neighborhood. No other large multi-unit buildings currently exist in the neighborhood. Members of the community believe that this project is the wrong project for this location.

It is important to note that in the early 1900's, NYC took the 1000 resident community of West Hurley by imminent domain to create drinking water supply for the city. No efforts have been made to provide services or create spaces for the citizens of the communities of West Hurley and Glenford to gather together. In addition to providing much needed space for performing & visual arts as well as educational and community activities the buildings could also provide some rental income back to the town - creating a win/win situation for the taxpayers and residents.

It is time for the citizens to own these important buildings and preserve the Nature Trails in our community to benefit residents, visitors and future generations alike.
