We are working to obtain 2,000 signatures to help save our Florida Drivers and Riders. From November 25, 2012 to December 4, 2012, four motorcyclists were killed in not-at-fault automobile accidents in Central Florida. The drivers of vehicles leading to these deadly crashes provided the statement, "I didn't see them." On December 4, 2012, another incident involving an elementary school bus holding two dozen students, including six special needs students, occurred. On the way to school at Red Bug Elementary, the bus driver ran a red light, hit another vehicle and crashed into a light pole. Like the drivers previously described, his statement to police was, "I didn't see it."

Currently, Florida Law requires individuals to successfully complete an eyesight exam at the DMV to obtain drivers licenses. Drivers are then allowed to renew their license online twice, extending the expiration date by 4-6 years with each renewal. This ability, while helpful, provides the possibility for an 18 year gap between eye exams required for drivers licences. Thus, this leads to the possibility of an individual who would be wearing corrective lenses, driving a 2,000 pound vehicle and causing accidents because they "...didn't see them."

With this petition, we request from the State of Florida legislation to be passed revising the current corrective lenses requirements for drivers licences. We request that an up-to-date eye prescription be mandatory when renewing drivers licenses.

Currently, driving without corrective lenses is a criminal offense. However, there is no legislation requiring the eye prescription to be current (or even within the last decade). There is no legislation requiring an individual's vision to be checked again after first obtaining their drivers license. We want to bring this issue to the attention of the State of Florida.

Please help us in bringing this information to light. Citizen's lives are more important than a simple 5 minute eye exam.
