We Canyons School District
students, parents and patrons want the District to know that we are STRONGLY opposed to the proposal by the Evidence-Based
Learning Department to shut down the Middle-Years International Baccalaureate
program at Midvale Middle School. The IB program is an important part of Midvale
Middle School. MYP IB teaches students to think effectively, to expand their
horizons, to explore new possibilities and to think about what MORE they can
become. Some MYP IB students go on to participate in Hillcrest’s IB program,
which offers options for everything from students who plan to get the full IB
diploma or subject certificates to students who will earn the IB Career Pathway
certificate through CTEC and other trade classes. Some MYP IB students won’t go
on to do IB in high school, but will do better in every class they take because
they were MYP IB students. We do not understand why this program should be
under assault by the EBL department when other programs, such as language
immersion, are never criticized as being “too expensive” or not working,
despite the fact that those programs have problems and challenges of their own.
Supporting
this program that has done and will do so much good for thousands of students
should never be thought of as “too expensive”. We KNOW it is worth it! Please
save this program!
MYP IB needs to remain an option for those who want participate in an excellent program and move on to IB at Hillcrest.
