The State Charter Board reversed their decision and Kairos Academy will remain open for our students. My heart is full knowing these mothers can continue their education in a place that truly sees them. We should stay vigilant about future oversight but for now we celebrate this massive victory.

After being open for a short three years, a public charter school in the state of Utah that specializes in helping teenage mothers graduate from high school is at risk of being shut down. The State Charter Board has recommended that Kairos Academy be shut down because of poor performance and failure to comply with recommendations the board has given. However, poor performance is being measured by standardized tests rather than academic improvement of students, and Kairos Academy has made every effort to improve both academic and social opportunities for students. Shutting down Kairos is not the answer. Please sign this petition to show support for a more individualized, compassionate education for students that really need it.

Seeing one hundred people recognize the value of our school fills me with such relief for these students. This is a vital first step in proving that these young mothers deserve a place where they are seen as more than just a test score.

I spent the afternoon reading through your comments and the stories from these young mothers are truly heartbreaking. These students are relying on us to defend the only place that actually sees their potential instead of just a test score.

Kairos Academy has given me the opportunity to catch up on credits and even graduate early. Kairos Academy has a very unique learning enviornment that gives girls under special circumstances the ability to learn without distraction.

As an educator I understand the struggles high school students go through without the added burden of being a parent. When the state comes up with an assessment the compares apples to apples they can talk about academic progress.

I was a teen parent that completed my education through a similar type of school. Thank God for schools like this and the teachers behind them. Teen parents need as much support as possible. Shame on the system for trying to shut them down instead of showing support.

At least one of my former students has benefited from this program! Without it, there's no telling where her life would be headed. Now she's six months from entering the medical field. She got pregnant at age 15. Please don't close this remarkable school down.

Please reconsider the data again with a realistic perspective on these students' situations. Not all progress is measured by standardized tests, and if society gives up on them, they will give up on themselves and their child.

My cousin attends this school, and I have never seen her more excited about school. This is somewhere she can feel safe and she actually feels like she has a chance to graduate. Please don't take away this amazing opportunity for her and other amazing teenage mothers.

I went here! Without this school I wouldn't have graduated! Much less continued on to college.. Kairos academy helped me out a lot! And I hope one day to give back to them like they did to me. So I will start with this. Stay open!
