We, the residents of streets surrounding the site of the former Millard Fillmore Hospital at Gates Circle, object to the rezoning of the property to allow a shopping center on the site. If a specific business, not allowed under current zoning, is needed at the site the developer should work to obtain a “Use Variance” for that business. We believe that adequate retail exists one block away on Elmwood Avenue and that a blanket approval for large scale commercial use on Delaware Avenue would have a significant negative impact on surrounding streets due to increased truck and automobile traffic. Because of the demand for housing in the neighborhood we support the residential component of the plan, knowing a case by case zoning variance remains an option.

I see the counter ticking up toward a hundred and it makes me think about those old trees at the circle that will definitely be gone if we let the trucks just take over everything. If everyone here could get just one neighbor to look at this link today maybe we can blast past that century mark before the sun goes down.

As the recent accident that destroyed the fountain area demonstrates, Gates Circle traffic is dangerous. In additiion to preserving the Olmsted Parkways and historic nature of the neighborhood, the idea of retail parking adding to the traffic chaos that already exists there is frightening!
Gates Circle is a beautiful entryway to the City. Please keep it residential. There are shopping centers a few blocks away on Delaware and Elmwood. We don't need another plaza. Commercial space is needed downtown and on Main St where there are plenty of buildings waiting to be inhabited.
A blanket rezoning is unnecessary. Allow the neighborhood to participate in the process by asking for a variance as needed, Larger scale commercial development should happen on Main Street, where there is a greater need.
I'm opposed to additional retail. I want my neighbor to remain a safe place for my 4 children to play without the additional traffic. We have enough retail development on Elmwood Ave.
Keep the commerce in a sensible proportion to the residential nature of this area. A decent bodega or small grocery store, a laundromat, a coffee shop, a bakery... a few small shops would make sense for local use and walk-up and not overload local parking or traffic flow.
These greedy corporations and land developers need to stop taking away from the people of these communities and stop lying to us while lining their pockets. It will not improve the area as they say it will only lessen the value, and I'm not just talking finacialy.

Traffic on Lafayette is already problematic with truck traffic and people constantly speeding and passing on the inside and outside regardless of painted lines. To add unlimited retail at the end of our street would only exacerbate the problem not to mention decrease property values. Please, do not approve this change in zoning.
