We the residents of Essex Avenue in Bloomfield and Glen Ridge demand that town officials stop the plans to paint a continuous double yellow line down the entirety of our street.

These lines will forever change the nature of our neighborhood by sending a signal to motorists that Essex Avenue is a major thoroughfare.

We all desire a solution for a safer street and calmer neighborhood without turning Essex Avenue into a permanently busy road.

Updates

September 11, 2015

I have requested a formal meeting with the Bloomfield planning department to review the traffic study results. We are preparing a written proposal for alternative street calming measures that do not involve permanent road markings.

September 11, 2015

The scale of this support has secured us a formal meeting with the town planning board next week. Our next step is to present the full list of signers to the department of public works to demand a pause on the painting project.

Attempting to turn Essex Avenue into a thoroughfare for overflow traffic from Broad Street is entirely inappropriate and dangerous given the residential nature of Essex.

Double lines will only decrease the property values on Essex Ave. Installation of speed bumps will slow down traffic and deter those from speeding down the street.

The speed cars travel on our street has always been an issue that both Bloomfield and Glen Ridge have never cared about. There is no reason to make this a thoroughfare when Bay is one block away and Ridgewood is only two blocks away. Leave it a quiet residential street.

We should give the double line solution a chance. The other alternatives are so expensive, obstructive, noisy and will make snow removal hellish for the municipality and for us. Let's give the current plan a chance. The engineers probably know what they're doing.

Now that we've gotten curbs I suppose a double yellow line is the payoff. Thanks for nothing.

Please do not paint a double line down Essex Ave. As it is, people rocket down the street. Has anyone considered just adding speed bumps to slow people down?

It's already a freeway on this road and it's not even paved yet. Please keep our streets safe.
