This is a national issue which will be of direct concern to the people of Elmbridge Borough Council when DEFRA "rolls out" its culling policy in 2014.

The object of the petition is to ensure that Elmbridge Borough Council's badger population is as safe as possible from slaughter and that the already available injectable badger vaccine against bTB is used in as many cases as possible.

We ask this because we believe the culling policy is inhumane (DEFRA's measurement of "humaneness" is to time the screams of wounded badgers), inefficient (previous culls showed an increase in bTB because of badger movement) and unscientific (the majority of scientific opinion hold that a cull will have "no meaningful result").

To preserve the integrity of this petition please only sign it if you live, work or study in the Elmbridge Borough Council area.

We, the undersigned, call on Elmbridge Borough Council to prohibit the culling of badgers on council-owned land and invest in vaccination programmes locally. We ask this because we believe culling to be inhumane, inefficient and unscientific.

Updates

April 30, 2014

The scale of local support has reached the level required to ensure our request is formally added to the upcoming council meeting agenda. I am currently preparing the documentation for the housing and planning committee to review our position on vaccination over culling.

Vaccination & biosecurity will be effective in the long term - culling is cruel & ineffective.

Although the Rt. Hon Phillip Hammond does not support the stopping of the badger cull I hope the local authority will take a more compassionate approach. Animals have as much right to inhabit this planet as we humans do... and I am not a crank!

The badger cull in the West Country was supposed to be a pilot, to be scientifically assessed. We know that such scientific assessment takes time - enough to be able to judge at least the medium term efficacy of the cull in severely limiting bovine TB. To charge ahead with more badger slaughter before a thorough assessment is not only inhumane, it is scientific lunacy. What have the British people come to be associated with such inhumanity and ignorant barbarity! Politicians, in our name, oppose this precipitate and misguided quick fix!

We don't have TB in Surrey so what excuse do you have for culling badgers?
