I remember the tree. I remember it being in fairly poor health 30 years ago too. This isn't just about reminiscence though, there's an important lesson here: As long as it's not dangerous there's no real reason to remove it, things can be moved around.

Thank you for your comment. However, you did not answer Stuart's question - How will putting the bus in another part of the school, which is quieter (thus more conducive to learning) and won't take up already sparse playground space affect children's education.
An important part of the present Science curriculum is conservation and respecting living things. The main focus in the Science Curriculum is Working Scientifically and aims to get children to investigate cause and effect, variables and devising their own experiments/ looking at actual real life examples of the effect of variables. Stuart is the Manager of Biodiversity at The Natural History Museum, London. As he points out you only have to look at the health of the beautiful blooming cherry trees still in the church yard and likely planted at the same time (they form a long line) to see that decades of being under tarmac, having branches cut off and being deprived of water and nutrients has meant that this tree is not in the best health and needs taking care of. This is the perfect example of the effect of variables on an experiment. We are 'lucky' to have such an example to show the children. We will hopefully be even luckier to be able to show the children what happens to a tree that has survived such conditions when the tarmac is reduced and much needed water and nutrients are given to it.
The school has just applied to become an Eco-school. My nine year old daughter has been chosen as one of the children's representatives. She was chosen from a large number of applicants due to her understanding of ecology and the need to protect, preserve and respect living things. The aim of becoming an Eco-school is to educate children on the above.

I would be very interested in learning how you feel that saving this tree from needless slaughter will affect children's education Derek?
All we are asking is that the bus is placed in a more appropriate position.

You have got to be having a laugh. The tree is on its way out anyway. Do you seriously put a old cherry tree that is well past its best before a child's education!

If more classroom space is required then build it. A bus is not the answer. Trees are more important than advertising space.

As a former member of staff of 15 years it would be a shame to see the trees disappear. There is very little shade in the playground as it is for children in the summer, the cherry Tree has been there for years and is used as a meeting place for children and parents alike making it a massive part of school community. I The children especially in winter already have very little playground space without reducing it even more!

I played around that tree when I was a child and then waited by it for my children to come out of school. It's part of the school!

conservation and history need i say more. i used to play forty forty round that tree i'm now 45 my brother would be 51 if he was still alive and he played around that tree too.
