Is dit echt noodzakelijk of is dit weer eens een bestuurlijk-geïnspireerde fusie waarvan men later zal verzuchten: 'wat jemmer dat dit er zo snel doorgedrukt is, deze kennis krijgen we nooit meer terug'. Ik vrees het laatste. Te vaak het ik dit soort verkapte bezuinigingen moeten zien en meemaken. We hebben hier iets moois, is het nu echt zo moeilijk om het in stand te laten? Stop de afbraak van deze collectie en laat het war het is.

Als Nederlands burger en geïnteresseerde in de oude geschiedenis van het Midden Oosten, Egypte en Mesopotamië ben ik tegen de plannen van het bestuur van NINO. Keer op keer is mij de laatste 20 jaar gebleken dat dergelijke operaties om geld te besparen uiteindelijk neerkomen op enorm kwaliteitsverlies van diensten en instituties, Voorbeelden te over. Ook de uit die plannen voortkomende schaalvergroting en in het verlengde hiervan de daaruit onvermijdelijk vloeiende anonimiteit zal schade toebrengen aan de resultaten van de onderzoeken van het instituut, die m.i. juist baat vinden bij "ons kent ons", doordat makkelijker - al dan niet terloops - informatie uitgewisseld kan worden die tot nieuwe inzichten kunnen leiden. Niet geheel vergelijkbaar, maar met gruwen denk ik aan het Tropen Instituut, dat uit zgn. geldgebrek als oud vuil op straat is gezet.

The INDEPENDENT status of the NINO absolutely needs to be maintained and saved against new, ambitious bureaucrats who while launching attractively looking promises often turn out having a double agenda of their own making. As far as merely scholarly pursuits are concerned there is no fundamental distinction between the situation now and that of ca. 80 years ago when an independent NINO was created.

Deviding knowledge, books, tablets etc. will end in decline. Who will take care in the long run? So don't, save these treasures.
