We support preserving Arlington’s urban forest and are concerned about the rapid loss of trees on public and private lands. The loss of 81 trees or more along only 1400 feet of Donaldson Run’s Nature Area is very serious and deserves careful reconsideration. These irreplaceable mature trees are important to the environmental quality, energy efficiency, and psychological health of Arlington. The Donaldson Run Tributary B steam restoration project, costing taxpayers over $1 million, sacrifices the broader natural environment for a single storm water purpose. This must be put on hold until better alternatives are developed to use the money more effectively to meet all the community’s goals.

The scale of this response has forced the county board to formally acknowledge our concerns. I am currently coordinating a meeting with the planning department to present our demand for alternative restoration methods.

Unnecessary loss of 81 trees on beautiful public land? No! One has to also consider the continuous loss of trees and pouring of concrete in the neighborhood. Come to nearby North Vernon Street where hillsides with dozens of mature oak trees have been bulldozed off on private lots by developers and Arlington County can't stop it.
Let's keep Donaldson Run a natural site with plenty of leafy protection for wildlife. We don't need more over-the-top "engineered" parks in Arlington!

This project accomplishes nothing and it should be cancelled
Arlington cannot afford to lose tree canopy. The rate of development both commercial and residential has impacted greatly on the comfort, beauty and health of the county. I first moved to Arlington in 1992 and I often myself shocked at the visual change and amount of concrete/pavement that has arrived since then. Stronger tree replacement and protection provisions must be given to builders, developers and the county board.

The limits of human engineering on the last "restoration" are evident to anyone who has slogged through the mud pits or watched the replacement trees die.
