Hello, my name is Shamar Smith and I am a student at Canisius College. After being reinformed, in my opinion later than I should have been (considering all the heat and passion the former intent of this petition had created), I was informed on the afternoon of June 8th, 2016 that my school has NOT terminated both the cheerleading and dance teams, but has intentions of bringing them together as one team. I was a member of the Canisius Cheerleading team for the 2015-16 academic year, and had all intentions of continuing on with this amazing program, as this past year was my freshman year. Having junior coached my senior year of high school, trying out, and making the cheer team in college, I have been involved in cheerleading in more ways than one up to present day; I love it with all my heart and it has really shaped me into the person I am today. This decision was made with the intention to "revamp." But I strongly do not believe this is the right idea, nor do I believe that any "revamping" will occur. Cheerleading and dance should remain seperate for one main reason: they are two SEPARATE activities. Both are sports and both spread school spirit, but they are carried out in different ways. One cannot train a cheerleader and train a dancer in the same way. It just cannot happen; cheerleaders do not turn and dancers do not stunt. We are different from one another. Also, to take into consideration, this new rumored "Spirit Squad" will be coached by one person. This is completely unfair to the coaches that were formerly in place of the both the cheerleading and dance teams. If one were to be chosen, the other would be out of a job opportunity. And even worse, neither is guarenteed the future coaching position. So if someone new were to come in, it is almost a bit of a slap to the face. I now ask that any and everyone sign this petition in support that cheerleading and dance remain separate. I completely understand if signatures are revoked, as this petition is for a different purpose now, but I, along with anyone else who may view the petition, will have no other choice than to believe that any and all signatures on this petition are in favor for it. No doubt in my mind that this transition in funds is going to be allocated towards the D1 athletic teams. I'm disappointed in the school's lack of communication.
I wouldn't be who I am today if I was not a member of the Canisius dance. Every member of cheer and dance becomes a life long Canisius athletics fan and in this case a season ticket holder. It is very upsetting that students today won't have the same opportunity that I did.
I would like a real reason for their decision to cut the program when the cheerleaders fundraised 99% of what they needed - our company also donated $100 for their trip to Florida that never happened -we will writing a letter demanding a refund
When deciding which college to attend, I chose Canisius because of the strong cheerleading team. Cutting both dance and cheer teams would be a major loss to the school and the students. Both teams bring so much spirit and enthusiasm in different ways to the Canisius basketball games. Canisius needs both teams to continue.
I picked Canisius for its dance program. I was inbetween two local schools, and because the other did not have dance, I picked Canisius. The team was a way to have fun, forget about stresses and enjoy the true spirit of Canisius. Please reconsider your decision, athletics.
One team for both cheer and dance would cause unnecessary changes to two strong programs. The idea of one spirit squad is radical.

The Dance Griffs is where I met some of my best friends and made some of my best memories. These teams are just like any other sports team at the college. It develops the same social and discipline skills. If they do away with the teams, I'll be very sad for those that will never have the positive experiences that so many have had.
