Cleveland leaders have proposed closing Burke Lakefront Airport to redevelop the 450-acre waterfront into parks, housing, and mixed-use space. They call it a “once-in-a-generation” chance to reconnect the city to Lake Erie.
Closing Burke isn’t simple. The airport has accepted federal grants that legally require it to stay open for years unless the FAA or Congress allows an early shutdown.
Pilots and aviation groups strongly oppose the plan, arguing Burke is vital for flight training, medical flights, emergency services, and events like the Cleveland Air Show—and that nearby airports can’t easily replace it.
The debate is ongoing, with no final decision yet.
