Reasons to save Brighton Hippodrome!

1) Brighton could be the cultural capital of England.

2) Increased revenue for the South Coast.

3) Increased employment for the South Coast.

4) A theatre big enough to take larger touring West End shows.

5) More affordable shows for those who can not afford to go to London

6) To restore the beautiful old building and maintain our cultural heritage.

7) Brighton does not need more half empty cinemas.

8) More opportunity for local artistes.

9) Potential for traditional vocational training for young theatre makers, thus reducing their education debt.

10) A perfect venue for events as part of Brighton Festival and much more.

My father was employed by Moss Empires for 40 years and was the chief electrician, operating the unique and now historic switchboard. I was privileged to see almost all the productions from pantomimes and variety shows at a very young age and the many ballets and operas, plays and musicals, some very elaborate stage settings; performances by so many famously talented artists. I have many wonderful memories of the magic of live theatre in the beautiful surroundings of the Brighton Hippodrome. It would be a tragic loss to lose it for a cinema, however many screens it may have. Once done - gone forever. Cineworld profits are down. Live theatre is winning over cinemas now. I wonder why this is a battle. No brainer?!

The planned conversion which Brighton & Hove CC planning department approved must be annulled. This is the most awful thing that could happen to this beautiful building. To alter it's fabrication would be barbaric. It must be restored to it's former glory for live performance. There are more than enough cinema screens in Brighton to cater for residents and visitors alike.

ludicrous to make this theatre into a failing cinema, when Brighton can't offer a full-size venue and misses out on large-scale touring productions. The council must be mad to miss out on the chance to encourage this cultural asset to our city. and for once be remembered as doing something positive for Brighton & Hove

Many of those cinemas are running on almost empty, most films I have been to have only had a third of the seats filled at most. There are lots of people that would prefer to go to a show in Brighton than travel to . London. Imagine the revenue for restaurants and shops in the surrounding area and the number of people that could be employed in the renovation and running of The Hippodrome as a Theatre! Cinemas only need a few staff where theatres need hundreds, when you consider all the performers, costumiers, set designers and builders, musicians, make-up artists, front of house, sound and lighting technicians, stage managers and directors, etc.

A circuit of touring theatres is essential if we are ever to get good shows out of London and to as many towns and cities as possible.

This exceptional theatre, designed by Frank Matcham, could be a great cultural asset to the region and a draw to people across the UK. It would be criminal to accept these plans which would put it beyond use as a theatre.

What is being done? Who are your high profile supporters? You need to make more of a splash to get these terrible plans thrown out once and for all before the bulldozers move in. It is a scandal.
