The city finally committed the funds for our library. It has been a long and draining road to get here but we actually won. I am going to rest for a while before we start monitoring the construction plans to ensure they follow through.

Hi, everyone!We are the 6th grade class in the Sauganash Elementary School in the Sauganash neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. Our class has the privilege of doing the ABC project, which is a program where students identify a problem in their community and then work to solve it. Well, we also have a problem in our community, and that is lack of a library. Our nearest library is in Edgebrook, 1.2 miles away and right on Devon Ave, an extremely busy street. To walk or bike to the Edgebrook library we would have to cross the I-94 interstate exit and entrance ramps, which is very dangerous. Our goal is to raise awareness in hopes to build a Sauganash community library, which will be open to students from Sauganash School, Queen of All Saints School, as well as anyone else in the city who wants to come and have a quiet place to read, think, or do research.
We have created this petition in hopes of convincing the Alderman and Mayor to help us fund a Sauganash community library. But, what some people don't see in a library, is that it is not just the books. A library provides a safe place for kids to go after school if a parent is not home, it provides a place where kids can get homework help if their parents are not around, and a place that kids can go where there is a librarian who knows them and can help them with things from homework to science fair projects. And the best thing about our proposed library is, the whole Sauganash community can walk or bike there. We will not have to ask our parents if they can drive us to the library, we will ask them if we can walk there. We would really appreciate your support in our campaign to get a Sauganash community library.

Reaching this point has been an exhausting climb but the momentum is undeniable now. Seeing so many people recognize why our neighborhood needs a safe space to learn keeps me going when I feel ready to quit.

The emails we sent to the alderman's office remain unanswered but I am not surprised by the silence. It is exhausting to keep pushing when no one in power wants to listen yet I know how vital this library is for our neighborhood kids.

I feel a closer library is in order. The school itself does not have a library which hinders students doing research without relying on a parent to drive them. TIF money was used to build a Thai place in the old police station on Pulaski which has never opened. Put this money to some educational good for the children in the community!!!
I support the need for a satellite library for the Sauganash community, east of the Edens Expressway. This location can be easily accessible to young school children and the eldery, who may have difficulty crossing the busy streets and expressway overpass that exists between their homes and the location of the Edgebrook library.
This is a great cause especially since our neighborhood school (Sauganash Elementary) does not have a library. Well done 6th grade! We support this cause.
Great idea! Hope we can get this project. I even think that the Senior Citizen population (like me) would love a Library here.
A library would be an amazing addition to our community. With two K-8 schools very close by I'm surprised we don't have this resource in our neighborhood.

I feel it is unsafe for the kids to have to travel all the way to edgebrook. Crossing Cicero ave and going over the bridge. The bridge it to narrow to the street.
