Seatbelts on busses on designated seats
26th June 2007 Dear Sir/Madam, We, the undersigned, as residents of the UK and as users of the public transport system, are writing to request the provision of safety belts on the buses of London. We are particularly anxious about seats designated for the elderly and for mothers with children, because the elderly and children are less able to hold on for dear life when a bus must make an emergency stop. We understand that drivers follow very safe and precise manoeuvre guidelines and we appreciate this, however there are emergency stops which even the most careful driving cannot avoid and it is for this reason that we ask that you do what is within your power to assure the provision of safety belts so that passengers who want the option can ensure their safety during their travel on busses. We also understand that seatbelts hanging loose can trip up passengers moving around in a hurry and we therefore suggest, prior-all, that the safety belts be of a "auto-self-retract" type so that unused seatbelts will be out of the way of causing harm. Even if the provision of seatbelts were to prevent only one injury, and we would like to think that this would be the case, it would be a worthwhile achievement, because for some people the public transport is their only means of getting around - particularly the case for the elderly and for single parents! How can anyone be forced to travel in compromised safety We thank you in advance for the efforts you will have to go to on behalf Public Transport users in order to achieve a measure of this nature and we look forward to a response in the positive.
