The area of Woodend north of Woodend-Wallan Road has a large number of young families with school-age children, many of which walk or ride to school in town everyday. Research shows that it is not only beneficial for childrens' health to walk or ride to school (rather than be driven), but also that it is good for their confidence and self-esteem to be trusted to do this by themselves once they have reached an appropriate age. Children walking or riding to school, in Woodend from the northern part of Woodend have to cross Woodend-Wallan Road near what used to be the Bentinck at least twice every day. However, due to the T-intersection, this is a very difficult crossing for children as they have to anticipate not only what traffic on Woodend-Wallan Road will do, but also those turning into the road from the Avenue of Honour. This is particularly difficult for younger children, and there is currently nothing to help them cross this road safely. We ask the Macedon Ranges Shire Council and VicRoads to urgently investigate options for a safe pedestrian crossing across this road near the Avenue of Honour, so we don't have to worry about our children crossing this road on their way to school (or on their way to catch a school bus!)
I honestly never thought this would gain so much speed and honestly watching the numbers climb has been wild because it shows how many of us are actually scared for the kids crossing that intersection every morning. It feels like people are finally paying attention to the danger at the old Bentinck spot and it makes me think maybe the council wont be able to ignore us for much longer.

Ons of the best things about raising our children in a small country town is the fun and independence they feel in riding to school. It is a busy and confusing intersection for children to navigate. Anything that we could do to make it safer would be great!

This is a dangerous intersection for children to cross. School buses collect there and I have personally witnessed near misses. Needs to be safe now!
