Being able to keep backyard chickens as pets has become very common these days. They are no longer known just as a food source, they are becoming part of our families. I have 12 hens that have done just that, become part of my family. I was unaware that I was breaking any type of ordinance, that is, until I recieved the notice at my home that I was in violation, and given 12 days to rehome my girls.
If you feel a person should be able to raise backyard chickens, in a responsible manner, please sign this petition.There simply has to be more folks like me out there! I live in a rural section of Walton county, Georgia. With our current "R1" zoning, it doesn't matter the acreage you may have. If you have 10 acres and zoned R1, you could lose your right to keep your chickens. This NEEDS TO CHANGE! We as a community need to come together on this and see a change in the zoning. From pets, to having fresh eggs for our familes, we should be able to choose if we want to have chickens. It should not be determined by a "broad" rule set by the county, we should have an option.

My boys (2 10 yr olds) loved our animals. We never had to ask them to feed them. They had fun with them and now they are completely heartbroken about all of this.
We are on almost 2 acres with a little over acre fenced in back yard. I had more than enough space for all of my animals (code enforcement told me i had plenty of room too) I have lost a couple chickens in the past year so we only had 4 hens and 1 rooster (which we had just got).
I recently just went through the same thing. I was even made to rehome our PET pygmy goats. I had them for almost 3 years and then on the 24th of March I got a knock on my door from code enforcement. It's not fair and something does need to change. Thank you to everyone who has signed so far.
Please change this so that people who live on land in a rural community can own chickens. I have friends who own chickens in the middle of the city of Denver, Colorado. If someone can own chickens in a city, then most certainly someone who lives in rural Georgia should be able to have chickens.
If the city of Chamblee can approve backyard chickens, surely unincorporated Walton can allow them.

I am moving from San Diego, where I can have chickens on a very small (way less than an acre) R1 lot. Wanted a 1 acre R1 in east Loganville (Walton) but now need to go west to get out of Walton county due to my 4 chickens. This is a revenue loser for the county.
