The school board finally backed down and approved the new bell schedule. It took constant pressure to force this change but the board members could not ignore us any longer. Stay alert to ensure they actually follow through on this commitment next year.
We would like the new bell times for RPS 535 to be implemented for the 2021-2022 school year. We ask this to be added to the agenda and reconsidered at the very next school board meeting.
The school board can no longer pretend we are not watching them while they ignore our families. This momentum proves that the community is fed up with their incompetence and we are finally forcing them to confront these ridiculous schedule changes.

It is going to be difficult enough for students returning to school after what is likely to be at least a year away due to the pandemic. Don’t make it worse by having them revert to the early start times. Not having to wake up before 6:30 am has been the silver-lining to this cloud of distance learning.

I don’t understand why the district will have to draw “new” bus routes for the later start time when students are still being picked up in the same order (HS/MS followed by ES) that they have always been. Can’t they just use last year’s bus schedule 40 minutes delayed? This doesn’t seem like a good reason to keep kids sleep deprived for an extra year.

This would be a HUGE benefit to our students and their ability to learn. Under the 7:25 start time, students in my neighborhood have to wake up around 5:30 to catch a 6:35 bus. That’s an insane hour for students with after school activities and nightly homework to meet.

Having lived in Winona, where the school start time was changed a number of years ago, I witnessed the clear benefits of having older students start later. Moving to Rochester in 2019, I was very surprised and saddened that this positive change has not been implemented here.

Having taught middle school for many years I have witness the need to have middle schoolers start school later. The early morning classes were taught to very sleepy students. I wish I would have charted more closely the effectiveness in their learning of this lack of sleep.

Should do everything possible to avoid early start times, which have well-documented adverse effects on manifold aspects of students’ health and well-being. 8:30 minimum threshold as “protective,” the later the better.

I would have absolutely benefited from a later start time when I was in middle and high school. Between homework, sports and trying to find time for a part time job, having to be on the bus at 7 was really tough.
