Whereas Patricia Martinez and Lisa Golden have been married since 2004 and have been denied rights as a married couple, we petition, Maggie Brooks, Monroe County Executive, to recognize this marriage.
The case, Martinez v. County of Monroe, was filed in 2005 in State Supreme Court on behalf of Patricia Martinez, an employee of Monroe Community College in Rochester, seeking health care benefits for her female partner.
One February 1, 2008, the New York appellate court ruled that marriages of same same-sex couples entered into outside of New York must be recognized in this state.
The ruling was a 5-0 decision in favor of Ms. Martinez.
Currently Ms. Brooks is using our tax dollars to appeal and delay the court's decision.
We call upon our elected official, Ms. Brooks, to obey the decision.
Watching Patricia and Lisa be denied the basic dignity of spousal benefits after all these years is infuriating. We are still waiting for word from the county office but your dedication proves that we refuse to accept this delay as normal.
July 29, 2008
Reflecting on how far this has come reminds me that Patricia and Lisa deserve basic fairness instead of endless delays from the county. Seeing this momentum grow reassures me that our community refuses to let legal loopholes define dignity.

Ridiculous to keep wasting our tax money on this fight. Just let them have their benefits already!!

Its shameful how much money is being thrown away here. These women have earned their benefits just like everyone else.

Stop the appeals and do what the court said. It is 2014 and people deserve to be treated equal.

They have been married a decade. Leave them alone and stop using my money for your own personal agenda Maggie.
