Richard N. Salem Commutation of Sentence Community Recommendation

December 17, 2012
The Honorable Governor Janice K. Brewer
Arizona Governor
Executive Tower
1700 West Washington Street
Phoenix, AZ 85007
Honorable Governor Brewer,
In accordance with the decision on September 12, 2012 by the Arizona Board of Executive Clemency to recommend to your Governorship that the sentence of Richard N. Salem be commuted, we the undersigned citizens, associates, dear friends and family, in the Sedona community and elsewhere, hereby offer our strong agreement with the Board’s unanimous decision. As the Board has found conclusively that Richard’s case, his character and his conduct merit this commutation, we in turn vouch for him on a personal, community and societal level. Richard is an upstanding, safe and very valuable member of the Sedona community. He is a kind, trustworthy, gentle, creative and productive individual. He is a healthy asset to our professional, business and social body. Richard has a background in art history, holds a Masters Degree from ASU and is an accomplished music artist and graphic designer. He has worked with numerous local businesses, non-profit organizations and has been an active participant in community benefit events. We look forward to the continuation of his success. There has been an overwhelming outpouring of concern and support for Richard from the outset of this case, beginning almost 7 years ago. Given the unfortunate absence of an earlier resolution to this matter, we believe wholeheartedly that commutation at this time is the most just, right and proper conclusion. We ask sincerely that you grant this measure of relief. Richard will be lovingly embraced, supported and assisted in his transition upon release to community supervision. We are eager to welcome him home.
With tremendous gratitude for your consideration and respectfully yours,
Undersigned Citizens
