Arizonans in support of State Representative Cecil Ash's proposed Prison Sentencing Reform Bills
Representative Cecil Ash was appointed Chair of the House Interim Committee on Prison Sentencing Reform. This week he will present the proposed bill reforms to your Judiciary committee. The Bills numbers are HCR2025, HB 2374, HB 2648, HB 2664, HB2380 and HB 2378. In many cases in Arizona we have “required” sentencing statutes, while well-intentioned, have sometimes been too severe, and caused more of an injustice than justice. Many judges agree.
In AZ we are incarcerating too many non violent people in our prisons who would do better on probation or home arrest. Some would do better receiving substance abuse treatment than be in prison. All these inmates are costing the taxpayers of Arizona almost $1 Billion per year (and rising).
Rep. Ash will present Bills that would dramatically reform sentencing statutes and save Arizona tax payers millions of dollars. By signing this petition we are showing our support for Rep. Ash's proposed Bills and we urge you to hear these bills before the deadline of Friday, February 18, 2011.

The bills are sitting in front of the committee now and honestly I keep checking my phone every five minutes to see if any of these representatives have finally decided to act on them. It is wild how much time and money we just throw away on these outdated sentencing rules while real people get stuck in the system instead of just getting the actual help they need.

I really never thought this would gain so much ground but here we are and people are actually waking up to the absurdity of the current sentencing situation. It is honestly mind blowing to see this level of interest because it clearly shows that taxpayers are tired of paying for a broken system that does nothing but lock people away when they really just need a different path.

US has the highest incarcertion in the world. We need more schools and less prisons. We need to save the prisons for the cold blooded killers and career criminals
taxpayers cant keep footing the bill for petty crimes while real criminals run free. lets get people back to work instead of sitting in a cell costing us a fortune.
