As residents of the South French Broad community and stake holders in the local tree canopy. We, the undersigned, would like the City of Asheville to consider planting trees around the Asheville Housing Authority at 165 S. French Broad. We believe that planting a substantial number of trees on this property would help blend this municipal building into the neighborhood, contribute to the city's goals of increasing the urban tree canopy and provide needed shade along a bare portion of sidewalk. Thank you for considering this proposal.

The sidewalk remains bare but the support is growing. We are reaching out to the city to discuss the planting plan this week.

When we moved to our house it was surrounded by trees. The city has since cut down 25 trees visible from my porch in Aston Park, and another unknown number of trees in the parking lot of 165 South French Broad. I was told that these were cut to reduce crime in the parking lot. I think there are many more sophisticated approaches to that problem. We have increased noise from the highrise, including arguing and profanity, almost every day. Please plant trees all around the City property. The City's tree study found that Asheville lost 6.4% of its canopy from 2008 to 2018, and that our neighborhood lost canopy cover too. The City can be a part of the solution here.
This action would address an obvious gap in the original HACA building development plan i.e. return the street to its original tree lined state and maintain continuity with the rest of South French Broad Ave.
More trees are a good idea always and, in this case, would add shade as the trees mature and beautify the area.
This is an ideal location for an idea that will hopefully continue to spread throughout our wonderful city.

Trees have so many benefits to people's physical and mental health, and sustain habitat for birds and small animals too. And they are beautiful! This stretch of SFB feels especially "bare" when we walk it. Please bring the trees back!

Very needed on SFB! Perhaps a couple additional trees can be attained for neighbors to plant in front of Bartlett Arms. These would replace the ones felled last year in front of that building.
