Arts exposure & inclusion is so very important to creating well-rounded individuals and needs to remain a requirement for students beyond 6th grade. Failure to do so will have long-term affects on those individuals and society as a whole for not all learning is done through core academics. My son will be starting kindergarten this school year. I'm hoping by signing this petition good things will be in place for his future. The testing done nowadays and the lack of arts is frightening. Arts open up your mind and creativity.

Money for the Arts is very important, time to STOP VOUCHERS and get MONEY back into our INDIANA PUBLIC SCHOOLS!!!! Give our children the the gift of creativity, allow them to learn the joy of expression through the ARTS and see what positive ideas come forth. There are tons of studies supporting MUSIC and ART in our school, it is time we follow those studies!

My daughter Elizabeth Fecher is a Senior at AHS this year. She is so proud of the accomplishments in her music career. It would not have been possible if she wasn't exposed to music in middle school.

Sadly corporations and school boards often review the performance record of an arts program and base their impression on the effectiveness of said program almost exclusively by the awards and accolades that the program has achieved. If a program has won various honors at local, state, regional, or national events, then it is assumed that the program is thriving and there is no need to restore any budget to a previous level. There are two HUGE problems with this logic. First, a program should not be penalized for finding ways to succeed in spite of less funding. I have personally witnessed several teachers within the Avon arts programs bend over backwards, put in longer hours and volunteer extra time in order to make up the difference. To then ignore their passion and dedication and replace it with an assumption that the system is working adequately undermines their commitment to helping the program weather the current storm of insufficient funding. Second, equating success with awards etc. is equivalent to using only test scores to evaluate the effectiveness of a school system. We know that there are qualitative measures of student development that extend far beyond tests and assessments, and the effects of a program, both good and bad, won’t always show up in such results. False positive results are just as common as false negatives. Bonds of trust that develop through the teacher-student relationship can often have a profound effect on a child’s development over a long-term period, but are almost invisible through a short-term lens of assessment. It is often the intangibles of a program that have the most lasting effect on a student’s growth and development and this holds true with the arts programs in Avon and elsewhere. Like most programs, you will get out what you put into it, and I fully support the community in their efforts to remind administrators that increased funding in the arts will have a greater effect on the development of the students as

I've been working and went to college in media arts and science for a while and it was all due to the foundation that I had from going to elementary school in Avon. Every kids deserves and needs these classes in their life.
