Respect UEBS PhD Researchers: A Request for a Formal Apology & Consultative Review of the Student Engagement Monitoring Process
On October 31st 2019 many PhD researchers at the University of Edinburgh Business School were sent an email entitled, "Student Engagement Monitoring". This email caused widespread distress.
The purpose of this petition is twofold:
1) PhD researchers (and their supporters) request a formal written apology from the PGR Office for the sending of an email we collectively characterize as unprofessional, accusatory, and unnecessarily alarmist.
2) PhD researchers (and their supporters) request a consultative review of the process of Student Engagement Monitoring in order to most efficiently and appropriately address the university mandated requirement.
This petition will be sent to the Research Degrees Committee to be discussed at their next meeting on November 28th 2019.

November 13, 2019
The volume of support signifies a clear mandate for the Research Degrees Committee to address our requests during the upcoming meeting. I am currently finalizing the formal submission package to ensure our grievances and proposed policy revisions are presented clearly to the administration.

That email, and a later one aimed at justifying the distress without even a hint of remorse, amount to one of my lowest moments as a PhD student.
Extremely shocked that in an environment with a rich history of higher learning that those aspiring to enrich and continue the future integrity of the institution that is the University of Edinburgh are called into such accusatory questioning.
Hope that we can take all steps to avoid this type of communication in the future.
The school should communicate closely with the supervisor about the process and progress of the PhD research of each student. It is not about the attendance but the process.
An email like this sent wide would cause outrage in a professional environment. Why should this be any different in a higher stress locale.
Surveillance is inexcusable, especially in the UK
