As we all know, the final exam for AAU students starts on January 3, 2022. But we, the second-year students at AAU, don’t believe that this is a fair decision. We say this for many reasons, some of which are stated below.

  • The university's timetable had directed that the respective campus begin second semester classes on a certain day; however, this was not implemented.
  • We haven’t covered all the chapters included in the exam. Even for those subjects that we did cover, the lectures were not thorough enough due to the limited amount of time that we had.
  • The last few weeks have been very toilsome as we have been given many assignments to hand in forthwith, so we didn’t get enough time to prepare for our final exam.
  • To make matters worse, recently a lot of students at AAU have been affected by a flu-like disease that seems to be spreading rapidly. These students have had difficulties studying and going to class. We cannot say for sure, but as far as their symptoms are concerned, there is a high probability that these students are infected with the new variant of COVID-19. The outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been declared a public health emergency by the Ministry of health of Ethiopia in order to prevent the spread of this disease. For an institution as big as Addis Ababa University, we believe that it’s the duty of the university administration, staff, as well as the whole community to take the necessary precautions like practicing social distancing, limiting large gatherings, and the like. Also, testing is required to confirm if someone has COVID-19 in order to prevent further infections.

So, due to these and other circumstances, we kindly request the university to consider extending the date of the examination until the ill students recover and the safety of the school community is ensured. If the administration believes that doing so will impede the assessment process, consider giving us a single day off between each of the two consecutive exam days to relieve us of all the anxiety and tension we are feeling. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Share for Success
