As we all know, the final exam for AAU students starts on January 3, 2022. But we, the second-year students at AAU, don’t believe that this is a fair decision. We say this for many reasons, some of which are stated below.

  • The university's timetable had directed that the respective campus begin second semester classes on a certain day; however, this was not implemented.
  • We haven’t covered all the chapters included in the exam. Even for those subjects that we did cover, the lectures were not thorough enough due to the limited amount of time that we had.
  • The last few weeks have been very toilsome as we have been given many assignments to hand in forthwith, so we didn’t get enough time to prepare for our final exam.
  • To make matters worse, recently a lot of students at AAU have been affected by a flu-like disease that seems to be spreading rapidly. These students have had difficulties studying and going to class. We cannot say for sure, but as far as their symptoms are concerned, there is a high probability that these students are infected with the new variant of COVID-19. The outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been declared a public health emergency by the Ministry of health of Ethiopia in order to prevent the spread of this disease. For an institution as big as Addis Ababa University, we believe that it’s the duty of the university administration, staff, as well as the whole community to take the necessary precautions like practicing social distancing, limiting large gatherings, and the like. Also, testing is required to confirm if someone has COVID-19 in order to prevent further infections.

So, due to these and other circumstances, we kindly request the university to consider extending the date of the examination until the ill students recover and the safety of the school community is ensured. If the administration believes that doing so will impede the assessment process, consider giving us a single day off between each of the two consecutive exam days to relieve us of all the anxiety and tension we are feeling. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Updates

We hit one hundred signatures today. It is exhausting to see how many of you are struggling with the same impossible schedule and health concerns I am. I am tired but I will keep pushing this forward because we deserve a fair chance.

The exhaustion is setting in for everyone but we are still pushing forward behind the scenes to get these exams moved. I have been fielding messages from sick students who are terrified to walk into a classroom right now and that is why we cannot stop fighting for this delay.

Seeing the weight of your agreement confirms that I am not alone in feeling this exhaustion. The university remains quiet for now but your persistence keeps me moving forward even when the odds feel impossible.

I am sorry to say that the plan the university is only to finish the course with the teaching speed of teachers that is comparable to jet's speed rather than how effective is the teaching. what I want to ask is. if it is only the matter of finishing, why students devote one year in their life?

It is enough if we get one day gap between successive subjects, rather than getting exam starting date extend. If the starting date is extended, we are keeping sressed,so it is unnecessary.

I am student of Information science batch 2013. The second semister final exam period will have been taking place on Jan 3to14. This schedule is not appropriate, because fist the exam period doesn't have gap, second we haven't finished all courses yet . Since we haven't finished the courses, how can we take the exam .

Atleast if it's not possible to postpone the exam, please give us a gap day between exams so we can have time to recover from the flu. Stress and pressure only makes matters worse.

WE ARE FORCED TO FINISH A 4 MONTH LECTURE IN LESS THAN 2 MONTHS WITH STRESSFUL ASSIGNMENTS AND INSUFFICIENT STUDY TIME SO PLEASE PLEASE GIVE US A BREAK FOR AT LEAST A WEEK SO THAT WE CAN COVER THE UNCOVERED PARTS AND GET THE GRADES WE DESERVE.
