Solent UCU will need to gather at least 100 signatures from members and staff at SSU, by way of a petition, before the members Report on Workplace Democracy at SSU can be placed on any university committee (constitutional requirement). In this instance, we propose the Board of Governors. As you may be aware from the Vice-Chancellor’s briefings, the university is currently in a very challenging situation and our members believe that the Solent UCU proposals for organisational reform and democratisation (see the outturn of the ORC 2016 Staff Survey) will prove to be absolutely vital in securing our short-term and our longer-term survival prospects as a vibrant autonomous institution. The momentum is building fast. We have officially cleared the path to bring our proposals before the Board of Governors.

I believe that the de-personalisation of process and services, has a detrimental effect on the cohesiveness of the work force.
Acting on constructive criticism is essential to avoid making the same errors as an institution over and over again
The lack of staff representation in any and every aspect of workplace change is shameful.
Democracy should be an integral part of modern society - better decisions are made if it is.
Workplace Democracy Freeing people from a fear of retribution for challenging social, environmental, and organisational norms and therefore embedding a culture of innovation is surely the raison d'etre of higher education, so surely we all desire to workplace democracy?
Our concerns have not been taken notice on by the VC

Most universities have senates where concerns of staff from all levels can be voiced. These proposals address a vital concern that much important information here does not reach the ears of those in power to make change but is filtered up the chain of command.
