City of Oshawa Council - I am in favour of the City of Oshawa\'s proposed Residential Rental Units Licensing By-law.
The key highlights of the current draft of the bylaw are:
This will provide the city with the necessary tools to enforce various municipal, building and fire regulations.
Annual inspections will ensure compliance and will promote safety for tenants.
There will be some reduction to the density of renters by ensuring only 4 purpose-built bedrooms be used and not basements and converted living areas.
The requirement of the landlord to submit a parking and maintenance plan will ensure proper maintenance and care of rental properties and will promote better management of excess vehicles, which is beneficial to all in the community.
Some of the issues that are missing are:
There should be a maximum number of permits to control the density of rental units.
The distance between permit holders should be limited, similar to lodging houses in non-R1 areas, to limit the density of rental units
There should be a clause added that would mandate any future R1-Zoned homes within the Neighbourhoods of Windfield Farms and the Niagara Community (south of the UOIT campus) are included in the Licensing Zone.
I really thought this might just float around the neighborhood unnoticed but the momentum is suddenly actually real and I am pretty overwhelmed by it. It feels like people are finally seeing what I see when I look at these streets because the sheer volume of support is genuinely wild to me.

Finally some action. Tired of living next to a house with 8 students packed in like sardines. It is not safe.

My street is a disaster. Garbage everywhere and 6 cars in every driveway. Fix this mess already.

Get these slum lords under control. Oshawa was a nice place to live until the basement conversions started.

About time! Hope the city actually enforces this and doesn't just talk about it.

Need more restrictions on density. One rental house is fine but having 3 on one block ruins the whole neighborhood vibe.
