The recent tragedy in Aurora CO where a doctoral student fired an assault weapon into the crowd at a midnight showing of the new Batman film killing 12 and wounding 58 (would have killed more if his magazine hadn't locked up) is proof that Congress must renew the ban on assault weapons. The shooter purchased his weapons easily, some through local gun stores, the rest on the web where all he needed was a credit card. Without one background check he amassed an arsenal of assault weapons and 6,000 rounds of ammunition. This would not have happened had the Federal Assault Weapons Ban been reinstated. In 1994 Bill Clinton signed into law the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) , expired March 2, 2004 and the bill to renew the AWB has yet to reach the floor.
