The statue is finally down. I am exhausted but relieved that the space is empty for something better to take its place. This fight was long and often felt like hitting a wall, but we finished what we started.

My name is Tory Bullock and I've been watching this man on his knees since I was a kid. It's supposed to represent freedom but instead represents us still beneath someone else. I would always ask myself "If he's free why is he still on his knees?" No kid should have to ask themselves that question anymore. If you feel the same then sign the petition! "The Boston Art Commission voted unanimously to remove the Emancipation Memorial in Park Square on June 30th 2020. The motion called for bringing in an art conservator “to document, recommend how the bronze statue is removed, supervise its removal and placement into temporary storage".

"A statue depicting a formerly enslaved man kneeling before President Abraham Lincoln was taken down from a Boston park on Tuesday (12/29/20) after officials this summer voted unanimously for its removal".

Yeah this thing has got to go. I like the idea of Lincoln sitting at a desk signing and the former slave could be looking over his shoulder approvingly and pointing at the document. Can’t believe this statue still exists in a great city like Boston.
He is not on his KNEES, BUT ONE KNEE!! Rising up from slavery with no shackles to hold him down. That is the symbolism of this statue, but you are too well educated to understand that. I'm a 65 y.o. BLACK MAN! I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS!! WHY DON'T YOU??!!
I am ashamed that this statue exists. Let’s replace it with something created by a black artist, depicting an actual black figure from history standing (or sitting... sitting’s fine, too...) with DIGNITY... something that actually represents freedom.
This statue needs to go. While Lincoln was a respectable president, the images of this piece is demeaning depicting the black man in all fours being patted on the head like a dog. Please remove and/or replace this piece with something more appropriate.
Not only is this racist but it is an atrocity of an artistic endeavor. I went to school for 5 years and got a BFA all so I could identify in excruciating detail all the ways this astonishingly tone-deaf statue is Objectively, Undeniably Ugly.
