How does any person NOT feel uncomfortable with this statue pair? It is very outdated and should be removed asap. Showing a person crouching, kneeling on one knee BENEATH another person 'towering over' the man is wrong.

This is not an image that uplifts people of color. This needs to be removed. I think Lincoln would be disturbed by this image in this day and age.

While I signed the petition, it was the only way to be able to comment. I must say that I disagree with your point of view completely. How do you know that the slave os kneeling down. While it may “look like that” he’s actually not kneeling down. If you read in the Black Code Document of 1863; you would know that when an enslaved person is kneeling down to someone in power they go on both knees as a sign of power the person above them has. I do not agree with slavery at all, but I disagree that we should remove this monument. If you would closer into and see it as a perspective of someone with an artistic eye and the facts alone. You would see that the slave is actually in the middle of going to stand up. Also, you would see that in the enslaved mans right hand. He is holding the key to his shackles which informs that he has the power to take off his shackles and be free. Again, this is an opinion based on facts. Thought I should share.

Of course this was not meant to represent freedom. Considering Enslaved. Africans in america contributed the monies to create this statue this represents the same tragedy that it was not of their own IDEAS to build a statue 1. Not representing Enslaved African Women as well and 2. Still representing the African Man as a piece of property. This is a HORRIBLE RELIC. Considering Lincoln paid reparations to slave owners and did not spend one penney to build a correct monument to represent real FREEDOM!!!! NO WONDER LYNCHINGS OF BLACK PEOPLE WERE TO IMMEDIATELY FOLLOW SO CALLED EMANCIPATION!!!!!!
