Madison Ave NE between Torvanger Rd and Phelps Rd in Bainbridge Island, WA currently has a speed limit of 35 MPH. This road is located in a residential neighborhood between the historic Port Madison Lutheran Church and Frog Rock.

With homes immediately adjacent to Madison Ave, children at play, and multiple pedestrians and cyclists on the road shoulder, the 35 MPH speed limit is unreasonably fast and hazardous to neighborhood residents, pedestrians and cyclists.

This road has also become a "short-cut" for non-resident commuters avoiding Highway 305. These commuters exponentially increase road traffic volume at rush hours and routinely exceed the posted 35 MPH limit, increasing the risk of accident with residents, pedestrians and cyclists and causing substantial noise pollution.

We believe that reducing the speed limit to 25 MPH will add only seconds to the journey in this historic Bainbridge Island neighborhood and increase the safety, security and welfare of residents and road users.

THEREFORE, we, the undersigned, respectfully request that the City of Bainbridge Island lower the speed limit on Madison Ave NE between Torvanger Rd and Phelps Rd to 25 MPH from 35 MPH as soon as possible following the date of this petition.

I started this because I was worried about the traffic near my home, but seeing so many neighbors agree has been completely overwhelming to me. Your stories about close calls on this road are the reason this is moving forward. I have been gathering all of your experiences to present to the city council whenever they are ready to listen.

I am honestly a bit overwhelmed by the momentum behind this request. It is incredible to see so many of you care about the safety of our neighbors and children on Madison Avenue.

Speeding has been a problem on North Madison since we moved here, 25 years ago. But it has gotten dramatically worse in the past few years, as drivers use North Madison as a 305 bypass.

I lived in this neighborhood for years and lost several animals to speeding cars. Slowing down is a great idea!

This is an absolute "must" in my opinion. The speed of drivers on this stretch of road is far too fast to be considered safe for residents in the area. While it is a suburban area with houses abutting the street, it is often treated as a thoroughfare by drivers only trying to pass through the area at the highest speed possible.

Good luck, if successful we'll try for same on the east end of Hidden Cove Rd.

I'd love to reduce the commuter by-pass. Hidden Cove Rd. is particularly dangerous in the dark and would be well served by a similar measure.

Yes, it's unfortunate that cars are using the side roads to get past traffic backups but if this helps then I'm all for it.

I would like to see the speed limit dropped on the entire stretch of N. Madison. I live near the corner of N. Madison and Winther and it is ridiculous how fast people drive along the road.

It's already a dark street, as all are on the island, and reducing the speed limit will increase the safety dramatically
