The
goal of this petition is to reduce the speed limit in the Riverside
Grove Neighborhood in Bastrop, TX. We request the speed limits be
reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph on the main throughway streets and 15 mph
on the smaller internal cross streets. On a daily basis, vehicles speed
in front of our homes while children are playing in the front yard,
walking, running, and riding bikes.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) it takes 3/4 of a second to react to a child running in the
road, then another 3/4 of a second to decide to act and move your foot
to the gas pedal. That's 1.5 seconds just to think and act. According
to NHTSA, when driving 30 mph, it takes approximately 150 feet to stop
your car. By then, a child is struck.
In closing, we greatly appreciate your consideration in lowering the
posted speed limits in the Riverside Grove neighborhood from 30 mph to
25 mph on the main streets and from 30 mph to 15 mph on the smaller
internal cross streets. We know you would feel the same way and want the
best for your child's safety. We trust you will pass this request so
the current and future residents of this great neighborhood can and will
feel safe for their children and themselves while enjoying the comfort
of their front yard and neighborhood streets.
With great appreciation,
The concerned residents of Riverside Grove
My kids play outside all the time and I am always worried about the cars cutting through here way too fast. 15mph for the side streets makes total sense.
