Reduce Risk and Negative Effects of Walnut Ridge Recreation Area to Surrounding Communities

Johnston’s Walnut Ridge Recreation Area closes its gate during the off-season but remains a popular disc golf destination. To access the park, golfers park on the normally quiet residential streets of Eagle Crest and Eagle Point and trespass through private yards. Eagle Crest alone has 26 children that play in the cul-de-sac who are at risk from this increased and erratic traffic. We endure:
• Dangerous speeding in the neighborhood.
• Drunken driving, behavior, and profanity from the trespassers.
• Disrespect for private property: littering, dog waste, trespassing.
To prevent a tragedy, action by the Army Corp of Engineers is required.
As a community, we feel there are two viable options to achieve this:
2) Remove the disc golf targets for each hole at the close of each season.
We feel that these changes would maintain or improve the level of service to the park patrons, while reducing the risk and negative effects currently being experienced by the surrounding residents.

The quiet streets of our neighborhood have been the focus of my attention as I prepare our materials for the Army Corps of Engineers. Hearing your stories about the safety concerns on Eagle Crest has confirmed that this is a shared experience rather than an isolated frustration. We are currently organizing these accounts to present a clear picture of why a change in management is necessary.

Seeing this conversation move beyond our immediate neighborhood indicates that others recognize how easily a quiet street can become a safety hazard. This momentum provides a much stronger foundation for the discussions I am now initiating with local authorities. I appreciate the time everyone has taken to acknowledge the gravity of this situation.

We built in Eagle Crest because it was a small, quiet subdivision in the country with no thru traffic. Our large open side yard is a thoroughfare access for the park when the gates are closed. We endure disrespectful comments and actions from many in addition to the nuisance caused by multiple cars parked in a line in front of our house and down our property line. We don't feel comfortable leaving our teenaged daughters alone in the house while we are away, with the majority of the trespassers being male. Many bring their dogs off leash and allow them to run through our lot. Our two dogs are constantly on guard and excitable. A solution is greatly appreciated.
I have witnessed, on several occasions, unsafe conditions due to the increased traffic and high speeds of frisbee golfers who park their cars on Eagle Crest Drive. This is upsetting due to the fact that a key factor in our deciding to build and raise our children on this street, was that it is a quiet cul-de-sac with no thru traffic and should not have the volume/speed of cars that it does during the park's off season.

Opening the gate into the park earlier in the spring and later in the fall would help a lot. The gate really has no purpose anyway, people just park on the neighborhood streets and walk across private property lawns to get into the park. The park is a wonderful asset -- let the public use it and open the gates!

7393 Eagle Pointe. Our yard is a major access point for frisbee golfers and others to access the park since we do not have trees or shrubs along the back of our property. This traffic is constant. We find litter on a regular basis and noticed this weekend that someone has removed all of the screws from the covers on the old well, septic and eletric box in our backyard. We can only assume it's the trespassers. We will have to fix it so children are not injured. In addition, when the park IS open, the speed bumps are not enough! People speed and drive recklessly around the speed bumps. We spend quite a bit of time on our deck and know this is a serious problem. Maybe signs can be installed at the major access points on Eagle Pointe and Eagle Crest to deter trespassing?
