Hello, my name is Hayden Howard, and I am a current sophomore at the incredible Thacher School in Ojai, California. For two years I have witnessed what I believe to be an injustice. The issue is simply our collective failure to appreciate the hard work of the janitorial services here at our school. First, I would like to mention that the aim of this petition is not to accuse anybody of anything. Simply, it is to bring awareness to the fact that part of our school's community goes unrecognized. These men and women clean our school everyday so that we may have a clean space to learn. These are the people of the Kelly Cleaning Company, who do not have permission to enter the dining hall, are not recognized at assembly, and are often invisible to the community which they take care of. It is time for these members of our school to be recognized. I, as a devoted activist for workers rights, demand that the members of the Kelly Cleaning Company be granted full access to the dining hall (as everyone else already is) and that they be recognized for their hard work at the school while we are on vacation. My school's argument is that given the fact that they serve under an independent company, they are not members of our extended family. Yet, if one were to know these incredible people as I do, they would quickly realize that this school is as home to them as it is to any of us. At such an incredible school where respect and appreciation go hand in hand, I feel it is our job as students with so many opportunities, to give back whatever we can to those who do not have as much. I know that I would want to stop at the dining hall for a cup of coffee if my work day began before six, too. They make our lives possible. It is time to appreciate their hard work. You would not believe the amount of food we throw away. Thank you.
