Student Parents of Purple Sage Elementary School -- IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED. Please sign this petition immediately.

We, the parent(s) of Purple Sage Elementary students, would like the RRISD Board of Trustees to re-evaluate the proposed middle and high school attendance and consider not splitting Purple Sage Elementary School to Pearson Ranch Middle School and McNeil High School.

RRISD Board of Trustees are proposing that Purple Sage be split and some of the students attend Pearson Ranch Middle School and others attend Grisham Middle School. Details aren't totally clear, but stated in the latest Middle School Attendance Public Review and Recommendation on pgs. 26, 28, and 29. Link is... http://www.boarddocs.com/tx/rrisd/Board.nsf/files/AEQSKH72F4C8/$file/I.101316%20Middle%20School%20Attendance%20Zone%20-%20Public%20Hearing%20Review.pdf.

Not only will our students be split in middle school, but then possibly again in high school.

Social relationships built by students and parents will diminish when the consistency of our children's schooling is split... An important aspect of the student's development; emotionally and academically. Also, this can affect building a strong PTA support which will affect funding, quality teachers, and capabilities for schools to thrive.

Lastly, the commute to school will more than double through highly congested areas during rush hour. This not only adds to current traffic issues, but would risk our children's safety.

This is especially true when it comes to the Riviera Springs neighborhood... Over 5 miles one-way to Pearson Ranch Middle School vs. 2 miles one-way to Grisham Middle School.

Therefore, we cannot support this plan.

We are seeking to work with the board and administration to modify and present an alternate proposal which we feel better aligns with the Guiding Principles while accomplishing the goals of the original proposal.

Above all, we seek to do what is best for the students of RRISD.

Thanks!!

- Purple Sage student families of RRISD

Updates

October 16, 2016

The feedback from fellow parents shows that this split will disrupt our kids and harm our community spirit. Please email the board members directly today to tell them you oppose these new boundaries. I am preparing a formal packet for their next hearing to show how much this move hurts our families.

The momentum behind this effort proves that our community refuses to let our neighborhood schools be torn apart. Post this link on your neighborhood Facebook group today and email the Board of Trustees to demand an immediate re-evaluation of these zones.

Grisham is a small school. Instead of removing students, thou should be adding students. Especially when reports that Pearson will open at near capacity.

I agree with all these comments. Also, So many new families that have moved here paid MUCH more for their homes just to be able to have their child go to Westwood. I went to McNeil... My husband went to Westwood... We paid way more for a much smaller home to send our son to a better school! We would be very upset if that were to be affected... And for what reason?

These students and teachers have worked to build relationships and a community among the students of Purple Sage. These students should take that community and friendships with them to middle school and high school. Please reconsider breaking up this community of students and friends.

These changes would have a negative impact on all the children that attend Purple Sage. OUR children have created incredible bonds, especially those in the dual language program who have been classmates since kindergarten. Taking away those relationships heading into middle school and breaking middle school bonds into a high school goes against all the research available for children who are successful in these grades.

We live in Riviera Springs, our kids go to Purple Sage and Grisham. These changes would be beyond disruptive to the lives of many children. Please reconsider the zoning changes.

Please do not send Riviera Springs children to any other schools other than Purple Sage, Grisham, and Westwood. These are the three closest schools in RRISD and it would not be fair to the children to be bussed further away. I grew up in Riviera Springs in a time where we were bussed to Pond Springs and McNeil and I can tell you that not only that the time on the bus wasted valuable study time, but the geographic distance from friends made socialization difficult.

I stand with the others on NOT sending Purple Sage students to Pearson and McNeil. I will put my kids in Canyon Vista before letting this happen to them. I stayed in this neighborhood so my kids could all go through Westwood high school and did not work hard for years to have you send them to some other school.
