Who are we?

Te Roopu Raukura (TRR) are a group of parents and supporters who are applying to establish a special character school in the Matamata region.

What’s it about?

Our proposal aims to establish a section 156 special character school

Location

Matamata Region (preferably Te Poi)

Type of School

Designated Character School under s156 of the Education Act 1986 Wharekura Maori  (instruction in Te Reo Maaori, English as a compulsory subject.)

Composition and Starting roll

Years 0-13, approx 60 students

Start date

2012/2013

Curriculum

New Zealand National Curriculum and character of the school.

Vision

To nurture academic, social, and cultural excellence and to cultivate strong individuals who are able to contribute positively to their families, community, and country.

School Character

Emphasising the academic, social, and cultural aspirations of Ngati Hinerangi and Ngati Kirihika hapu, and the wider Raukawa community.

Why support us?

Through this proposal, TRR and members of the wider Matamata community are taking the initiative to remedy the dire educational performance of our young people. It’s time to take responsibility and aim towards a future where all New Zealanders graduate from an education system committed towards excellence, diversity, and equipping our youth with world class skills needed to successfully compete in both the domestic and international arena.

TRR propose the addition of a special character school (Wharekura) to the network of established schools in the Matamata region, thus adding diversity, specification, and excellence. It will provide an additional site on which parents, students, teachers, and the community can work to achieve the micro and macro socio-economic aspirations of Raukawa Iwi, the wider community, and the country as a whole.

TRR believe that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Therefore, the addition of a new school focused on the future will help address the educational troubles faced by young Maori, improve their position on many indices, and prepare our country for a brighter future.

We look forward to your support!!!!

August 25, 2011

I was just looking at the map again and thinking about how perfect Te Poi would be for this because the kids really need that space to grow. It has been quiet on the official front but I am spending all my evenings drafting these proposals and hoping someone finally listens to why this matters so much for our future.

Seeing this much energy behind the idea of a Wharekura in Matamata is honestly just wild because I remember when it was just a few of us dreaming about Te Poi and now look at where we are. It feels like the momentum is finally catching up to the vision we mapped out all those years ago even if the path forward still looks like a massive mountain to climb.
