Wight Blue Sky Arts is an established, exciting, independent company that has been delivering quality arts-based programs of learning to their students for over 3 years.
In many schools, the dictates of the national curriculum mean that children with learning disabilities are not given the flexibility to grow, develop, and enhance their learning as individuals. As a company we aim to provide the skills of self-expression, communication, life skills, and confidence, to each of our students, through the expressive arts of drama, music, singing, dancing, and creative artwork. We have witnessed at first hand astounding personal and group development, and are lucky enough to share in the joy of our students life-enhancing achievements.
The government recently adopted a policy which supports the setting up and running of a “Free School“. The school would be state funded, independent of the local authority but, crucially, could specialise in providing programmes of learning tailored to students individual needs. We at Wight Blue Sky Arts aim to open such a school in September 2011, as an arts based learning facility, the “Blue Sky Academy”. We believe that we can, (with this Legislation), create a unique opportunity for I.O.W. children who have learning disabilities, and their families, to have a real choice about their education and development, as never before.
In order to progress, the first requirement from the Government is that we are able to show interest and support from the community. We are looking to achieve this by putting together a petition signed by parents, teachers, therapists, health care providers, and absolutely anyone who thinks the specialised free school is a great idea. I am currently busy finalizing the formal proposal for the academy and your signatures provide the foundation needed to prove that our community requires this change.

Seeing this level of engagement confirms that our community recognizes the urgent need for a different approach to education. This momentum shows that the desire for a specialized arts-based environment is shared by many more families than I initially realized.

The island really needs this. Kids with learning disabilties deserve a place where they can actually shine instead of just struggling in mainstream classrooms.
