The catastrophic breakdown and death of the filly Eight Belles following the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby cast a spotlight on the need to provide greater levels of protection for the racehorse. In the media and on blogs and forums throughout the country, horse lovers and racing fans have been asking \"what can we do\"
The Thoroughbred racing industry has been looking at some of the issues currently being raised for some time. The Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit, coordinated and underwritten by Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and The Jockey Club and hosted by Keeneland Association,
I am honestly overwhelmed by how many of you have stepped up to demand better safety for these horses. This momentum belongs entirely to you because I never thought this would gain such widespread attention.

it is heartbreaking to watch these beautiful animals get pushed to the limit until they break. racing needs to change now.
