It wasn't long ago when LGBT citizens were violently abused, tortured, and murdered across the US, often with the perpetrators protected or even aided by law enforcement personnel. Human rights progress is impeded when an officer of the law publicly expresses opinions that encourage the dehumanization of a class of citizens.
Recent polls show that a majority of Americans support same sex marriage. The vast majority of Americans believe that LGBT people deserve protections against hate crimes. It is absolutely shameful for an officer of the law to publicly incite hatred toward LGBT people.

The bible also says that he without sin should cast the first stone, that we should love our brother as ourselves, etc. Dace might want to try out those passages first.

Citing the Bible as to how we should behave is as meaningful as citing the Harry Potter stories. Those who wish to believe in fairies have that right; but don't expect sane folks to be quit as stupid as you are.

In, short, the petition says the key point, "The safety and legal rights of all people who are stopped by the sheriffs' department employees or seek their help depend on staff who value and respect everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, age, or any other factor." and within is the key word 'depend'. For an officer to hold prejudical views based on religion, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, or ANY OTHER FACTOR, let alone expound upon them belies the foundation of trust which people look to them for. Yes, it's a 'saint's job' to fill the shoes of an officer - and why we all need to admire and respect our police who must hold such high ethics - but, those who wish to protect and serve must weigh carefully what they are choosing for their profession or not become a police officer, and when they err they must be corrected for it. The commissioners must take accountability for seeing that correction is made. Thank you, Linda Sturgeon, Phoenix, Oregon

I don't know much about organized religion, but I'm pretty sure that Jesus was much less about righteous condemnation (with the exception of the moneychangers in the Temple) than about love and affirmation .
