Public Safety and Equal Justice
TO:
Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters
and Commissioners Doug Breidenthal, John Rachor, and Don
Skundrick
We
call upon you to publicly repudiate the statement by a Jackson County patrol
sergeant in the Mail Tribune (Nov. 3, 2014) that the gay and lesbian members of
our community are “an abomination.”
The safety and legal rights of all people
who are stopped by sheriffs’ department employees or seek their help depend on staff
who value and respect everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, race,
ethnicity, age, or any other factor.
This officer was not hired to enforce the Bible, neither was he asked to do so. It is entirely reasonable to wonder how he will treat citizens of whom he disapproves in his daily work as a peace officer.
