TO: Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters and Commissioners Doug Breidenthal, John Rachor, and Don Skundrick
We call upon you to publicly repudiate the statement by a Jackson County patrol sergeant in the Mail Tribune (Nov. 3, 2014) that the gay and lesbian members of our community are “an abomination.”
The safety and legal rights of all people who are stopped by sheriffs’ department employees or seek their help depend on staff who value and respect everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, age, or any other factor.

I just looked at the count and saw 100 signatures which honestly feels wild because I was worried nobody else cared about this as much as I did back when I first hit publish. It is really something to see that many people ready to demand accountability from the Sheriff and the commissioners at the same time.

As the mother of children who are under the LGBTQ umbrella and are of color I worry for their safety every day. I should not have to worry about the publicly paid sheriff officers who are sworn to serve and protect.
This is repugnant. Please do not allow this man to, quite literally, call me an abomination. Because I don't want to have to worry about the responders religious beliefs when I call 9-11
I am hopeful that leadership in Jackson County will make it clear that personal bias is not acceptable in the performance of individuals jobs, especially those charged with upholding public safety.
The question is how can one hold such emotionally charged beliefs and not let them interfere with their judgement, especially in stressful situations where time doesn't allow critical thinking?
It is disgusting for a person in a position of power-especially a person authorized to use deadly force-to have discriminatory views like these. I am concerned for the safety of our LGBTQ community members and friends so long as this officer stays on patrol.
Look to Basic Rights Oregon for Jackson County sensitivity training.
The corruption of Mike Winters knows no bounds. Old Mississippi style injustice is alive & well in Jackson County Oregon. The Holy Father recently said to accept and embrace. The under-educated here, would do well to learn that JUSTICE is for everyone, equally.

This officer was not hired to enforce the Bible, neither was he asked to do so. It is entirely reasonable to wonder how he will treat citizens of whom he disapproves in his daily work as a peace officer.
