As a York family we are disappointed at the proposed charge for the Art Gallery. We visit York museums on a regular basis and find it important to stimulate and educate our children through these visits. Please don't rob our children of this free education.

The charges may be dropped. The council have deferred the decision.
Note this is the council not YMT!
I am sick of seeing stating wrong information about this wonderful organisation being greedy and wanting to charge. Again the CEO has stayed they don't want to charge but have been forced into it.

I want to be able to pop in and do 20 minutes at a different bit on the odd lunchtime, not have to make special journeys and trail round everywhere to get my moneys worth. No one will go as there is a finite amount of money available for York attractions and the Art Gallery is low on visitors must see lists.

How can we encourage young people and families to enjoy time learning together about art if we charge. Art is life and life should include art. Charging makes it exclusive.

After living and working for 5 years in York and enjoying it's splendour, I was looking forwArd to the renewed art gallery. I often bobbed in during my lunch brakes, as I was lucky enough to work right next to it. I loved the free spirit, the idea that you could just have a piece of art and inspiration halfway through the day, to brighten up grey and stressful days. Loosing the gallery (for who can easily spend that amount of money on a regular basis? Not many, I assure you) is loosing a way of life. And with the loss of the gallery for residents, York looses a piece of its heart. Onwards to become even morw of a Disneyland, instead of the lively city that i remember, a city that was nice to live in. Don't do it, York. Don't sell your soul!

It's important that visitors should be able to go and look at one or two pictures rather than thinking that they must see the lot.

Appreciate the economic climate but: Art is for everyone - engagement should not be determined by income; Mature students appear from the structure to be in the higher price bracket; Local organisations (inc state/third sector) will no longer be able to use art gallery visits as a positive catalyst for vulnerable members of society; Can YAG consider how the Hepworth, Leeds City Art Gallery and YSP champion inclusivity and are economically viable without excluding low income groups..? Would it be better for the gallery to sit empty in those tourist-light January months, instead of welcoming the locals..?

Why not aim for a mass audience and increase footfall? If you make art galleries expensive then you reduce your income both direct and through funding from the arts council and arts charities

I have no problem with charging tourists to visit, however I feel York residents should be free.

I can understand that the gallery needs to raise funds due to the severe cuts in funding in the last few years. However, £7.50 is pricey. Plus, residents should be free - or at least half price. It will be such a shame to not be able to just bob in to the art gallery for a mooch and a coffee like we used to do.

I think if they couldn't afford to do all the work on this building without charging the public for it then they should have left it as it was!!!
