A great opportunity is being missed here.Prohibitive charges will cause problems- fewer visitors and shop sales, the effective exclusion of large numbers of potential supporters, the impression that art is only for the elite who can pay- this is a misconceived policy. There are many more far fairer and nlightened ways of paying for the costs of a gallery which should be for the public, not just the well-off. Please reconsider now!

Museums are for the people and should be free

Real York residents feel excluded enough as it is. Inspiration for the next generation should be free.

Heading in the wrong direction - other museums and galleries are free now, and £7 is too much - just charge for specials like the National does

The Gallery Art belongs to all of the people, not just to an elite.

Education for all - free access to museums was the only good thing to come out of the Blair years. Don't make art exclusive to the rich - it is for everyone

wasn't the grant they received enough without making the york resident pay

York Art Gallery should charge in line with other UK galleries.

I've no objection to tourists paying, or even locals who are in full-time employment paying a modest fee like £3, but the unwaged should be allowed in free of charge. This is a public, not a private gallery and people should not be excluded because they are short of the necessary. Before long will similar rules apply at York Hospital? See the proposals put forward by a junior government minister in The Lords just before the summer recess. Guys, you're being softened up. There's much worse to come!

As a working class lad with no family history of engaging with the arts, York Art Galley gave me an entrypoint. I now work in the arts and want future generations of young, working class York citizens to have the same opportunities that I had. Art colleges are increasingly becoming the realm of the privileged, we must stop public art galleries from going down the same route.

As a York resident I often go into the Art Gallery for a short visit. If there were charges, I would not do this. Anyway, I believe that local people should be encouraged to visit, not discouraged. If there are charges, tourists will visit but not locals.

A retrograde step that excludes the people of the city. Shame on the council that introduces this.

Please keep York Art Gallery Free. My Husband and I both work full time and we could not afford to come to the Art Gallery if there was a charge. We very rarely come into York now because the Car Parking is so expensive. These factors together would stop us visiting. My favourite painting of all time is the Huge painting of the soldiers on the station that used to hang on the stairs at the Art Gallery. I used to love standing there gazing up at it. I have waited years to be able to come back and see it. I am so disappointed I will not be able to if this charge goes ahead. Ironically we travel to other Cities regularly to see their Art because the Parking is free or cheaper and their Galleries and Museums are free. ARt should be free it belongs to us all. If you have to charge at all make it £3 with free access for York Residents including York Card Holders. The Railway Museum makes money as a Wedding Venue and Corporate Event Hire. Now the Art Gallery has Gardens and a link to the Museum Gardens can this not be a way of generating income? The cost of the Art courses advertised and the cost for visiting the Museum makes it elitist. It does nothing to involve or encourage the ordinary people to feel a part of Art or believe that is for everyone. Curiosity to discover art will be crushed. The Art gallery would become a white elephant just as the other museums will if they start charging. Keeping a charge under £3 if you absolutely must would still get the numbers through the doors from all walks of life. I am still sad that you would ever think of charging and apalled that the price put forward is so high. Out competeing London on price is nothing for York to be proud of. The amount of people I speak to that visit York and already feel so ripped off they will not be back is high. The whole of York needs to rethink where it is going. We have waited so long for the Art Gallery to reopen, and so many people have given donations to support it. Please do not charge. It bel

Yet again York shows its money-grubbing attitude. Don't be surprised if locals and tourists don't go to the art gallery. By proposing charges for all York's museums the Museums Trust is shooting itself in the foot.

I have lived in the UK for two years with a holiday working visa and then returned to do an MA. Visits to museums and art galleries greatly enriched my education since it was in the museums field. These visits were also cherished by my younger self living in the UK on such a limited budget. Charging entry fees to these institutions punish local inhabitants who are already facing deprivation or tight financial situations and it also makes a place less attractive to visit for city break holidaymakers.

Please don't start charging for this art gallery. It was pivotal in my daughters earlier years and I am sure has influenced her in her choice of studies. She will not be alone.
