Of course there are funding requirements. However, the answer is not to continually shrink public spaces & amenities for locals. Art is a human right.

what a PR disaster!. The gallery contains a collection of art work bequeathed to the city for the benefit of local residents. There should have been far more consultation with residents, council and museums trust. It has been so very pooly handled and some insensitive statements made. I disagree with these charges and can see that York people will stay away. Great shame

I understand the financial difficulties the Art Gallery faces but £7.50 is too high a cost. I live in a YO postcode area & this is my nearest local Art Gallery & yet special concessions are only offered to actual York residents - they are not serving the wider localities. Perhaps they should have considered the cost of refurbishment and also consider charging for certain special exhibitions held within the gallery as other galleries & museums do.

Gallery staff have worked incredibly hard for over two and half years to create a gallery and collection that is spectacular, York City Council have pulled the plug on funding to York Museum Trust by 90%. How is the Trust to sustainably manage a now national standard Art Gallery, Yorkshire Museum and Castle Museum with no funding? They made the decision to cut funding a long time ago, obviously the Trust have limited options and yet only now that local residents are rightly annoyed do councillors suddenly step in.

The people who decide these things don't live in the real world. £7.50 to get in to a tiny at gallery. I haven't seen it yet but have been looking forward to it opening. There is no way I would pay that much money and don't know anyone who would. If it was free I would go often and happily spend money on a nice cup of tea and a slice of cake.

I know times are hard, but much of what is in here was bequeathed for the general good. Have donation boxes, sure. But if the larger, national galleries are free, then so should Yor's museums and galleries.

The renovations were sparked by a philanthropic 2 million donation. I am sure the donors did not want their generosity to be withheld from the ordinary people of York. The collection was bought with public money and should be accessible to all regardless of financial status. It is a disgrace that the council is not more imaginative in its ability to fund this civic legacy.

delete I would propose to make most York attractions free including the Art Gallery and York Minster. This could be done by adopting a practice common on the Continent - applying a very small tourist tax to anyone staying in the city, which could then be used to help finance museums and historic attractions.

Free access to galleries and museums should be a priority. Being able to go in to see one painting and then go back to see it again the next day is an important function lost if we're charged entry. Being charged turns visiting a gallery into a special visit, a day out, rather than a spontaneous part of daily life. Charge for special exhibitions perhaps, but the main gallery should be free.

The Arts in York should be free children will grow up knowing nothing about them .
People who enjoyed going in to the Art Gallery will stay away .

Charging for admission is counter-productive, apart from restricting access.Please stay free and sell lots of postcards and coffee.

This is a horrendous idea. I appreciate that the arts sector is being pummeled through lack of government funding, so charge for access to temporary exhibitions or certain areas by all means (as with the Tate Modern and National Portrait gallery), but charging for access to permanent works will only serve to further disadvantage the less well off, and those who might like to occasionally stroll around and enjoy the environment but not necessarily make a day of it. Restricting access will in the end disadvantage the whole of York's community.

Surely there could be a charging system that is less excluding for local people than this - charge for visitors but not for York residents who feel they already support the Gallery - the City Council should be prepared to spend more on culture to make this possible.
